Overall by itself the book is vevi nice, but as a response to Mircea Eilade’s “Bengal Nights” it is irresistible: I was no enigma. I devoured the story—a romance between a year-old Romanian student of Hindu theology and Sanskrit and a year-old Bengali girl, a poet—over the course of two days.
It’s fascinating to see the same events through different eyes, especially when they have allowed time and maturity to provide a more nuanced take. When Amrita recites a poem about trees, he takes her to be a pantheist. This response to Eliade’s “Bengal Nights” is a must read for the scholar’s fans – and a very interesting read for anyone interested in autobiographical work. Contents Book One page.
