The story opens with Jim Vanning, a commercial artist eking out a living in New York City while hiding out from the law and a trio of very personable bank robbers who are interested in the loot from a job that Vanning inadvertently disappeared with and then lost.

He tells the story in the first person but Vanning occasionally talks about himself in the third person, a symptom of his deteriorating mental status. I finished reading this book yesterday evening. A hunted man, James Vanning makes his way to New York City’s Greenwich Village, changes his name and sets up his own studio to work as a commercial artist.
