Before Thd had even finished the first chapter, I could see why. A 6-feet-tall, year-old spinster even though she was NEVER referred as that in the book, which I found very refreshingintelligent, self-confident and in possession of a sharp tongue – and quick fists – that had Vere doomed from the start. And he was really clever, too, even when he was drunk, which was all the time at least at the beginning.

I don’t need all my battles fought for me. I do hate being so tue, Loretta Chase is an excellent writer, as proven by her outstanding third book in this series. Neither of them wants to desire the other at all, let alone with such intensity, and they fight their fascination with each other every step of the way.

Fabulous narration by Kate Reading and a terrific story, as only Loretta Chase lastt write when she is on fire. Scoundrels series Top Romance.

I enjoyed reading about her trying to rescue young girls who were being tricked into prostitution, and how she boldly wrote the ugly truth about living conditions for impoverished women and other social issues, not caring one whit what others thought of her for it.

He winds up flat on his posterior after a well-timed blow from Lydia. This has made me want to go back and reread Lord of Scoundrels, which I read years ago. He does care though, and deeply, he has become The Duke of Ainswood by default as a result of a series of deaths in the Mallory family, not least 9 year old Robin, whom he loved and cared for after the death of Robin’s Father.

Bertie is a little slow on the uptake. Not recommended for under 18 or sensitive readers.

Her characterisations of all the principals and lasst secondary characters are excellent and very well defined; Ainswood and Dain are easy to tell apart as are Lydia and Jessica, and Bertie Trent sounds just as sweetly bluff and slightly loregta as he ever did. Was this book depressing? March 31, Publication Date: What a great start to the lorretta year, with a 5 star read. The main lst that kept it from being a keeper for me is that the pacing was a little slow in places, particularly in the middle between the time that Vere proposed and the scenes where they were informed that Vere’s cousins were in grave trouble.
